Dan Weiss Starts Work

Dan Weiss, Haverford’s 14th president, began his first week at the College today with a round of meetings and a big stack of boxes to unpack. Weiss, an art history scholar who served for eight years as president of Lafayette College before taking the post at Haverford, moved into the President’s house at 1 College Circle last week with his wife, attorney Sandra Jarva Weiss; two sons, Teddy 17, and Joel, 14; and dog, Allie.

Dan Weiss, Haverford’s 14th president, began his first week at the College with a round of meetings and a big stack of boxes to unpack.
Weiss says he looks forward to the coming months as “a wonderful period of transition.” In the year since his appointment was announced, as he completed a final term of service at Lafayette, Weiss has been gradually getting to know the College. “But finally being here on the ground now, I’ll get the chance to walk the campus and become part of the community,” he says.
And though the summer tends to be a quiet time at Haverford, it won’t be downtime for Weiss, who officially started today, with inauguration set for October 26. “I already have a full schedule for July,” he says. “I am planning to meet with as many faculty and staff as I can, and I am traveling around to meet with members of the alumni community and the board of managers—because the more I can learn quickly, the more helpful that will be to me.”
“There is lots to do,” says Weiss, contemplating a wall of cardboard cartons stacked in the president’s office in Founders Hall. “But even if I have to unpack 100 boxes I am okay with that. I am really excited about being here. I have great hopes for the opportunities I will find, and for what this college can provide to students. It really is a great place.”
